"Sony And Nintendo Rule Roost"

Industry: Sony is leading the video game hardware industry, while Nintendo leads sales in the video game software market, the Wall Street Journal reported today. Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time had $150 million in sales in December, or 2.5 million units, according to a survey by NPD Group, whilst hardware and software video-game sales totalled $6.3 billion in 1998, a rise of 24 percent from the last-year period figure of $5.1 billion. 2.9 million Playstation consoles were sold in December, taking about two-thirds of the US market, Sony told the Journal. Nintendo in turn claimed it sold 1.4 million units in December, which equals approximately one-third of the market. Sony and Nintendo together also have five of the top 10 games in the US, although Sony continued to outsell Nintendo in overall software units, selling 4.7 million in December. Sony has over 440 titles, compared to less than a fifth of that number for Nintendo. An analyst at NPD Group finished by claiming game and hardware sales could rise 10 to 12 percent in '99.
