You'reRight (pun intended) Nextel does use different technology. Their system is based on Motorola's (iDEN) integrated Digital Enhanced Network. I like the acronym about as much as the technology...not much. Although Nextel has been successful at selling to business who need 2-way radio, cellular and one-to-many broadcast capability, their signal performance and voice quality is nowhere near existing GSM, PCS or other analog systems. The technology is not compatible with other wireless systems.

Here's why I think this might be a good position trade: With McCaw controlling this thing now and Motorola not able to quite deliver the promised quality, I believe the Nextel bandwith can be overhauled for a different use. Could be sold outright, or re-molded, maybe for new wireless data applications...maybe even linked somehow to new LEO low earth orbiting systems like Teledesic (the McCaw/Gates LAN in the sky project). I think the Nextel frequency licenses are valuable period, and could bring a large buyer with re-modeling plans, imho. I have owned this several times over the last 4-5 years and will again this next week.
