Hutch - it's pretty clear that Barrick hasn't bought more than 9.9% - they would have to disclosed it. It's also pretty clear that Barrick want the whole thing, and they are highly unlikely to sell - in fact it would be the height of stupidity and poor business practice on several levels. For one thing if Barrick are outbid by someone they will get a lot more for their present stock than the current price, so why on earth would they sell their holding now?. But this property is of such strategic importance to Barrick that their intention must be to win it.

I very much doubt that NEM could win a bidding war with Barrick - they have a reputation for caution. Barrick is said (by them admittedly) to have the strongest balance sheet of any gold mining company. dd
