Annette, it is virtually impossible to manipulate the price of stocks like Dell because the float is much too high and there are far too many market makers. This kind of manipulation can go on when the float is low and orders overload the system. What happens in these internut stocks is that orders swamp the market makers, but instead of halting the trading they can sit around and cherry pick, which means they can pick your pocket. There have been lots of complaints that orders were confirmed at certain prices, but when the buy and sell orders actually clear the prices are different.
