Can't speak for "men". My *guess* is that holding a job is used as a proof of being normal and diligent. Same as women checking out guys. The women (three - count'em!) whom I've ever seriously dated had an aversion to deadbeats.
If I were single - I would be put off by no job - unless there were a special circumstance. Like a trust fund... :-) My reasoning? I want to be in a partnership. If we enter into one, I'd like to have the security of having run my own life - and I'd like Hypothetical Partner to have the same self assurance. Then - if we get a two-place towel rack it's as equals, not as sponsor and dependent.

Currently we are a one-income family. This frees Spouse to do full-time mother and housewife work. She's fulfilled, and since she had a job she doesn't have self-confidence pangs. Until she quit her career, we had separate checkbooks and delineated budget responsibilities. This was cool because it was the best of both worlds for us. An economic federation - two folks capable of independence combining for mutual benefit.
