A lot of those old farts are in congress so you would think they would be worried about this scourge befalling our land.

AT,

You can't compare Pozac to Viagra.

You are anti-Prozac but I don't believe you really know what you are talking about regarding Prozac.

SSRI's have helped millions of people from clinical depression, OCD and other mental disorders which have underlying organic etiologies.

If you focused and followed people who did get on Prozac and were able to see what would have happened to them if SSRIs such as Prozac were not available, you would appreciate what this class of drugs has done to help people.

No matter how well Prozac works there still is going to be a significant percentage of people who are going to commit suicide or perform some type of irrational behavior. Why? Because swallowing a pill is not a cure all for the underlying problem many of these people face AND because drugs such as Prozac often need up to 2 to 3 months before their peak effects are appreciated.

Giving a clinically depressed and suicidal patient a prescription for Prozac is not going to cure the problem. I assume if the person goes ahead and kills him/herself you will blame it on the Prozac. This is not the case however. Usually the problem can be blamed on too little too late. Many of these people really needed hospitalization followed with good counseling and some drastic lifestyle changes. But again, our HMOs certainly don't want to pay for all of this. We just want to see the "quick fix" expected in the Prozac capsule.

It is no different with Viagra. Don't worry that there may be a lot of underlying psychological problems between the man and his spouse. Just write out all those Viagra prescriptions for the "quick fix". So what if a few hundred guys are put over the edge and drop dead. So what if tens of thousands are put over the edge and have coronaries. We want that "quick fix". Forget about focusing on the causes of such a complex problem. Give me that "wonder" drug and let me try some. Viagra on the internet. Viagra on the black market. Viagra the miracle drug.

People believe only what they want to believe.
