HAHAHAHAHAHAAA!! No, actually, that is probably not too far in the future--after all, why not? I've never used Partition Magic, but it sounds to be something very close to choosing a partition layout from a menu. Microsoft is known to co-opt useful software like this and make it part of Windows (after the necessary licensing or buy-out of the company, of course!)

It would be a shame if they shipped it as one partition. It's a big advantage to have at least one extra drive, although I'm sure you'll survive. The main advantage I can see is for the purpose of back-up: If your OS gets corrupted your second drive gives you a convenient place to store data while you repair or format/re-install. There might also be other considerations having to do with the size of partitions affecting the distance the drive-heads have to travel and the resulting speed of the system, but I'm not sure about that one. Then there's the multiple OS's you can install on separate drives, but that something I haven't explored yet.
