SPEED TRANSLATION (time to download a 2MB file)???

CABLE -- 0-2 SECONDS! (Someone tell me this is NOT true!)

SOROS,

Actually, it's more like 5-10 seconds for a 2MB file. Sorry to disappoint.

;-)

That's why I'm a big fan of Cable. It's going to change how the Internet is used. Just curious, any other regulars here lucky enough to have cable? PM or respond to the board please.

Soros:

Read Newsweek article from November 23rd.....you have the speeds pretty much correct...the article is a good one and you can get it from Newsweek online.

Soros and Firenza,.

In the stated example,

>>SPEED TRANSLATION (time to download a 2MB file)???

CABLE -- 0-2 SECONDS! (Someone tell me this is NOT true!)<<

...keep in mind that the file size here is measured in megabytes, and the line rates are a function of megabits

Therefore you must multiply the MBytes by 8 bits per byte, in order to obtain like terms.

If you do this with the cable modem speeds of 4 Mb/s, you will see that

2 MB * 8 bits per byte = 16 Mbits of overall file size, and

16,000,000 bits divided by 4,000,000 bits/second = 4 seconds, optimal.

But you never get optimal, due to protocol overhead, propagation factors and turnaround, and congestion.

Hope this helped, Frank Coluccio
