How noisy is the cpu fan?

It is hard to tell with the power supply fan running. I would not characterize it as loud but you can hear it. I plan on adding some padding in the case. I believe I can deaden the sound of the internal fans with sound absorption.

IBM Deskstar 10GP (DTTA-351010) hard drives are starting to appear on the net at a discount now.
(10.1GB UDMA, 3.5", 5400rpm, 512k cache, 9.5ms access, 33mb/sec, 3yr warranty)
storage.ibm.com

I picked up one at onsale.com for $181.

It's not as spritely as the Maxtor 4320, but I don't need 17GB (I'd rather split space between 2 drives) and the Maxtor 8.4MB size has only a 256KB cache.

I also leaned toward the IBM Deskstar series as it is a proven performer... I rarely hear of an IBM drive going bad.

I'll do backups with my parallel port Ditto 3.2GB tape unit.
