I confess that I am a classic example of the trend I mentioned; having always talked about preferring an intellectual equal to a physical masterpiece, I ended up with the latter. Not so sure that selfishness is the right way to describe it, though. More of an unshakeable assumption about the natural order of the world, which so far has proven pretty much correct, though not always easy for the rest of the world to live up to.
