You can either sell through an MM like merryl lynch or you can sell to someone else using Electronic market makers like Instinet, Island, terranova etc. If you use Datek as your broker, most of your orders are going through Island. But Island already hadles like 50% of the shares traded on the nasdaq so getting rid of the MM's all together wont even be felt much. Heck the MM's themselves even use it to fool people.
