Jonathan,

I'm afraid I don't have too many answers right now. How did I get my hands on these stories? We have a business school library about 1/5 mile away from my work. They have a computer that taps into the Bloomberg database. Once I got my butt into that library it took me all of five minutes to find the stories and download them. I'm sure every marketmaker in PRLN saw the recent news release and said to himself, "hmm... that looks familiar". They probably all went back and read the old news releases and concluded "same old, same old".

It would be a very easy conclusion to reach. But I think it is also a shortsighted conclusion for three reasons:

1) I don't know if the four drug candidates currently tested are the same four samples that were previously tested. However, let's assume they are. If you can duplicate an experiment then you should have greater confidence in the results.

2) Actually, it looks like this my not be an exact replication of an old experiment since they used a different anti-cancer drug as a control.

3) This is the most important point-- I am pretty sure the current experiment is the first time that our company has claimed that their drug candidates worked against cancer cell lines that were multi-drug resistant. THIS IS A BIGGIE FOLKS, AND THE MARKET TOTALLY MISSED THIS POINT!!!

Jonathan, you said:

Perhaps the most telling conclusion: how much was squandered by the old management -- that none of these were taken to market.

It is frustrating--they were so close to accomplishing great things. It's almost as if they were running a marathon and decided to quit a hundred yards away from the finish line.
