"So if you didn't like how Windows was behaving, you would format C:, install Windows and then copy over from the backup w/over-write?"

No. I rarely have trouble with non-windows stuff and haven't ever needed to format C:.

Usually when things mess up, windows doesn't run.

I rename c:\windows... to c:\oldwin... before unzipping and making a new copy of c:\windows...

After I have this copy running, I delete c:\oldwin...

Keeping c:\oldwin... means I have copies of recent (since zipping) stuff just in case it's needed.

Just a thought -- I'm using Win 3.1 with DOS. Maybe Win 95, 98, 2000, or NT is sufficiently different these methods don't apply. Hope my attempt to help hasn't made a mess for you. PW.
