Do you honestly believe that these polling firms do polls just for the hell of it or do you think somebody might actually be paying them?

Polls done by third parties for private use can be very worthwhile. Polls where the questions are released along with the results are also worthwhile in that people have the opportunity to examine the conditions under which the results were obtained. Polls in which the questions are not released are worthless. Additionally, though this might be too much to ask of polling firms, the way in which people are chosen for the poll should be released.

Why? Should the government be red faced because they're using surveys commissioned, "cooked up" as you say, by Microsoft's competitors?
Well, it depends. Were the survey questions released? If so, they can be judged on their merits. If not, then yes, the government should be embarrassed.

First of all, you're preaching to the pulpit, because from an ideological standpoint I'm on Microsoft's side. But more importantly, I'm long the stock and options...

I just think the guy should have known ahead of time so he wasn't blindsided.
