Today's nytimes article on wine .

Certainly emulation as a strategy in the software industry has had only limited success in the past, in part because programs usually run significantly more slowly when they are emulated. Even when successful emulation can be achieved, keeping the software up to date can be a daunting task. Several years ago, for example, the computer work station maker Sun Microsystems Inc. developed an emulator known as WABI that was designed to let the Windows programs available at the time run on Sun's non-PC hardware. Although WABI was a technical success, it ended up having little commercial value, in part because it was impossible to keep up with the continuously evolving Windows operating system standard.

That about sums up the problem with wine.
