The Real Unix Laws

1) The user has to to tailor the environment

2) Making OS kernels large is beyond our comprehension, besides, 800 megabytes is small enough!

3) We can't find the caps lock key on this !@$!@ keyboard

4) The printer is out of ribbon again.

5) We were too lazy to type out plain English error messages and besides we need the after market consulting!

6) These programs are so slow that we have to start another one before the first one is done or we would never get anything done.

7) Synergy is a nice word that no one knows the significance of and it sells computers! We cannot figure out how to string these mashed potatoes into a working program that won't crash, so we are keeping it modular

8) If the program compiles, announce it. If it runs once without crashing, sell it. If it performs what the customer asked for, call it an industry standard.

9)Worse really is all we can get out the door by deadline time. The military demands the program be no more than ten lines in English, so we contract that out. The government we sell Grace Hopper's Cobol, because that actually does something. Ordinary customers get 4GL, which we feel strongly will someday work right.

10) Think heirarchically. The boss is always right. His employees make that so.
