Thanks Sowbug. I just fixed the problem before getting your e-mail, and your diagnosis was essentially correct on both counts. I had until this AM forgotten about the a/b floppy cable issue, and sure enough that's why the floppy 40 error was showing up. and I suspect that because the floppy I tested in the known good machine was poorly marked, I inadvertantly installed it there upside down.

This kind of compounded silly error did make much more sense than the idea that my hard drive was being fried. I was getting pretty puzzled about it all--the compund error part threw me off.
