Lucent, Ascend Don't Expect Added Y2K Problems, NYT Reports

Murray Hill, New Jersey, Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. and Ascend Communications Inc. don't expect any added risks from the Year 2000 computer problem because of the planned acquisition of Ascend by Lucent, the New York Times reported, citing Daniel Stanzione, Lucent's chief operating officer. Stanzione, also president of Lucent's Bell Laboratories subsidiary, said he expects many customers for Lucent's equipment to slow down their purchases toward the end of the year to focus on Year 2000 readiness. The two companies will probably stop their planned combination of data-processing systems in July or August until after the beginning of 2000, the paper said, citing Stanzione.

The Year 2000 computer problem, which could cause computers to crash or generate erroneous data, stems from the inability of some software to distinguish between 1900 and 2000.

Gary

Unfortunately, I was at work when the news came in about Brazil and the lower expected open. I had to use the phone. One second they were closed, the next they were busy.

No chance.

In the past Waterhouse had calls routed to other branches to handle the traffic. Now they just tell you they're busy, for you to call back, and hang up. This is not the way to handle business calls of any type.

Lessons learned (expensive lesson)! I am still ticked!
