Intel is trying to maintain a large pricing differential which is based on nothing but perception.

The original Celeron plan was to produce junk, and sell it at a discount. K6-2 made that plan unworkable, and Intel was forced to produce Celerons which run just as fast as PIII. They are in a very precarious situation. Intel can not afford to sell PIII's at Celeron prices.
