Maybe you got lucky over such a short period of time (2 months). But I can guarantee you that you will outpace them tremendously over a 5 or 10 years period. But, you already know that.

Mutual funds companies are now all offering index funds because word got out that they were underperforming the S&P 500. Why? Because they are more actively traded compared to S&P 500. I'm sure that correlation between decreasing rate of return and trading volume could be easily shown on a study. Probably has already been done.
