That's creative, but very wrong IMO. The classic revenue problem for software businesses is exactly the opposite, i.e. company builds hype for next version, customers stop buying current products in anticipation of new ones, then the new product is delayed. Given the major upgrades in the pipeline, strong sales in the current cash cows would be very good news indeed.

Sure, I'm really just playing Devil's advocate here. But what if the current sales reflect disbelief in the hype?

Most of these units shipped were installed with win98, so, actually , it just increase the base for future installation.
