THE NET PC: A GREAT IDEA

In early January, Compaq launched a new
machine dubbed the Internet PC. Full-page
newspaper ads displayed a list of goodies
inside the box that made the machine even
more Net-ready than other PCs now shipping. Admittedly,
there was a lot of fine print — noting, among other things,
that services like digital subscriber lines (DSLs) were not yet
available in many places. But the strategic shift was clear.
The Net PC idea is a great one — especially since the
Net has been driving PC sales for two years, and will do so
for years to come.
Since the company's purchase of DEC, we've all been
waiting to see what would be done with the crown jewel: the
AltaVista search engine. We can assume that the smart
kids at CQ are planning a litany of additional surprises in
effecting a strategy to put AltaVista higher up on everyone's
charts.
On Jan. 12, the company paid $220 million for
Shopping.com, a firm that lost $18.9 million on sales of $4
million in only nine months. A Net PC, a top search engine
and a money-losing though promising e-commerce site: It
becomes even more clear that Compaq is transforming itself
from a computing company into an Internet company.
