First Union and Vasco Digipass . . .

The "authentication" solution chosen by First Union appears to be a hand-held device which recognizes a PIN punched in by its user, and then communicates a "green light" to the computer identifying the user and allowing a transaction to go forward.

This system is more secure than a straightforward PIN or password system, but it is not as secure as a biometric form of authentication, since the Digipass device can still be operated by someone beside the true owner. In other words, its nonrepudiation element is inferior to what IDX can offer in the F3 or Compaq devices.
