When it comes to design it is diffficult to forecast for large complex chips. Computer simulation has really made enormous impact shortening the design cycle by getting more of the chip right with few passes.

With all the caveats aside, I do believe that if first silicon was run last summer that it is possible to have working parts this spring. I know of nothing in conflict with Jerry Sanders forecasts of some production during the summer and major production late in the year. This is for the .25 micron part and followed with a .18 micron prototype available next fall.

So as my gues I would say we could see a .25 micron 600 Mhz pushed part in December with a 500/550 Mhz production part. With the .18 micron part we could see 800 Mhz demos of prototypes.

Jim Re "Is there any general rule of thumb on how long it would take to debug a new chip"

Are you still following this lost cause?

McMannic - Re: " Is there any general rule of thumb on how long it would take to debug a new chip like the K7 after first silicon? 5 months, 6 months, 8 months?"

You stated the K7 was in production already, right Jimbo?

And AMD had first samples of the K7 in July, right Jimbo ?

So your answer should be about 6 months.

Right Jimbo ?
