>The Leonid meteor showers are also
coming this year. < They were already HERE- in fall '98. There will be a weaker shower this year, but nothing compared to the ones we saw in the fall (or didn't see- as in your case).

Bob,

If someone here knows or is willing to track down a qualified astronomer - I've other things to do - I am quite willing to bet that she or he will confirm that the probability of the earth being hit by a comet or asteroid in the next two years is identical to the probability in any given two year period in the last, or next, million years. In other words, it might happen, but probably won't. I have read scientific evaluations of the effect of planetary alignment; I don't remember the specifics, but nobody familiar with the subject seemed inclined toward panic. The Leonids already passed; cable TV flickered a bit, but that was all. Predictions, in general, are of minimal interest to me. I am - very slightly - interested in the odd phenomenon that I mentioned earlier, that so many people start thinking apocalyptically as millenia approach. Surely you are aware that many deeply religious people were convinced that the world would end at the end of the first millenium. A little more excusable then, I'd say.

I think X's explanation hits the nail pretty much on the head.

Steve

Bob:

That meteor shower passed with no consequences. The year 2,000 is an arbitrary year, the Hebrew year, Indian year, Chinese year, etc. are all much older.

Y2K is overblown. Earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, etc. have occurred since the beginning of this planet -- Earth is a living world. The last line-up in the solar system had Duncan Lunan speculating on the very same thing. It didn't happen. This was back in the late 70s.

And in the 1800s, the end of the world was predicted and 1,000s os farmers in the Northeast sold their possessions, sat on their barn rooftops and waited for the rapture. Some waited days until they climbed down and meekly returned to their fields.

Christians all over the world expected the end in 1,000 A.D. You weren't around then, but I bet you would have been an avid believer.
