EMC benefits from lower drive costs. Higher margins. If the disk drive makers get hurt, EMC wins.

Another aspect to EMC relates to where they are putting their emphasis in R&D. My understanding is that EMC has invested significantly in software to help in the data processing. The value added to the product comes not from the hardware but from the "nervous system" that ties it all together. This is the software. The disk drives are simply part of the bricks of the system and the cheaper they are the better it is for EMC. The value comes from the proprietary software and other components that are unique to EMC.
