Pin 1 should be marked on the CD drive too. Also, there
should be a notch in the socket and a missing pin in the
middle. If the notch is at the top, the missing pin
should be at the bottom (opposite the notch) and pin
1 (red stripe) should be to the right.

Not sure I followed your IDE configuration. WDC drives
have three jumper settings: Master of a pair; slave of
a pair; and only drive on the controller. Dern things
won't work if jumpered wrong (most other drives I know
about have the same jumper for master alone and master
of a pair). I GOTTA sell my WDC position <g>.

Try the slave jumper setting if your CD is alone on
the secondary controller. Many CDRoms use the slave
setting as CD alone or slave of a pair. The master jumper
setting is used only for master of a pair (opposite
of HDs, which makes sense).
