I think it's important for everyone to make a note of the fact that the purchase of SyQuest's IP, capital equipment and US inventory for $9.5 million is conditional on Iomega's purchase of inventory and equipment from SyQuest's Malaysian subsidiary.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Yes, all CD-RW drives can also write to CD-R media.

CD-R and CD-RW still have disadvantages compared to Zip and/or Jaz, the most significant of which is speed. Even at 4x, you're talking about a maximum transfer rate of 600KB/sec. Also, CD-RW media is still expensive, relative to CD-R media.

As I've said before, there are times when CD-R or CD-RW is the best choice, and there are other times when Zip or Jaz make more sense.

Meanwhile, while prices for CD-RW drives are coming down, so are Zip and Jaz prices.

<I thought all CD-RW drives can also write to CD-R media, which can be read by the installed base of CD-ROM drives.>

That is what I understand too, but I thought you were comparing rewriteable to rewriteable. As you know, CD-R media is not rewritable, even on a CD-RW drive.
