to the extent that Egghead and Amazon, AOL are bellweathers for Internet technology they are extremely important - this is the growth area for HW/SW companies like Sun and SGI - bigger and bigger servers are going to be outsourcing services (commerce, mail, etc..you dont think its actually going to sit around on your computer?). Companies looking to build their ecommerce infrastructure are going to use these companies as a benchmark. I actually like SGI - I just see them losing to many existing and future customers by betting on the wrong technologies - NT vs. Unix and Java. SGI was battling Sun in many accounts and had real advantages with ISP's and High Performance machines but are taking themselves out of the running rapidly.
