>>Reuters Story - January 19, 1999 07:59

NEW YORK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch and Co. Inc. , the nation's largest brokerage, on Tuesday posted a 23 percent decrease in fourth-quarter profits due to a steep drop in bond trading revenues, but still beat Wall Street expectations.

Merrill earned $359 million, or 86 cents a share, in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 25. The results fell below the $469 million earnings, or $1.15 a share, Merrill reported in the year-ago period, but beat Wall Street expectations of 64 cents a share. Net revenues increased 2 percent to $4.1 billion, from $4 billion in the year-ago quarter. <<
