Another sign on what the IDT product will yield IDX in quantity showed up in Friday's biometric cover story in IBD, where it quoted the CEO of Veritel, which sells a voice recognition product as saying, ''Our software adds 50 cents to $ 1 per PC shipped,'' Tomes said. ''Do you really think PC companies are going to include readers that cost $ 30 or $ 40 per PC shipped?'' (Remember, the Toronto article mentioning Mastercard implied a $30 IDT scanner price.)

As to Tomes' assertion, he seems to forget to mention that his software (a) doesn't seem to work well enough for its applications (b) doesn't seem to do more than lock and unlock the desktop (c) isn't on the market yet and (d) needs $50 worth of "Voicecrypt" software along with the in-PC software.

Brad, that face recognition idea is cute. It also seems limited to the desktop, and how do we know that people can properly pick out four preselected strangers from a computer lineup?

Every chance I get, I want to hammer home the point that a deal with Bank of America and its partners would result in scanner sales measured in the millions of units, and a sale to Mastercard or its captive audience would be measured in tens of millions of units. And IDX/IDT has the inside track with both of these giants.
