Artisan Intl Fund's Top 5 Hldgs Are Telecom Stks

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Artisan International Fund's top five holdings are in the growing global telecommunications sector, according to fund portfolio manager Mark Yockey.

In a CNBC interview Tuesday, Yockey said one of the most promising companies and a leader in Artisan's fund is the U.K.'s Colt Telecom (COLTY).

"It (the stock) has gone up 20 times since we bought it two years ago," Yockey said. "We think there is a lot of value here, and longer-term, we think this is probably the best-positioned telecom company in the world."

Also included in the Artisan's top five holdings are Canada's Metronet Communications Corp. (METNF), Virginia-based Global Telesystems Group Inc. (GTSG), Sweden's Nokia Corp. (NOKA) and British telecom concern Telewest Communications PLC (TWSTY).

Yockey also likes European financial companies because the continent's growing senior citizen population soon will be funneling their savings through the banking industry.

"In Europe especially, what is going on is people are saving up for their retirement," Yockey said. "There are not a lot of pension funds in Europe."

Additionally, Yockey sees consolidation of the European banking sector and a reshuffling of management there.

European financial stocks are cheap compared with U.S. bank shares, he said.

Artisan's banking holdings include Deutsche Bank AG, which recently acquired America's Bankers Trust Corp. (BT).

While there is some concern whether Deutsche can successfully merge the two companies, Yockey said the recent buy is a good sign the financial company is expanding its boundaries beyond Germany.

"It is also one of the cheapest bank stocks in the world," he added.

Lastly, Yockey said British cable stocks are also good investments because three companies, NTL Inc. (NTLI); Cable and Wireless Communications PLC (CWZ); and Telewest have a stronghold on the entire broadband service business for the Internet.
