CNet, NBC to offer high-speed Internet portal

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Online news publisher CNet Inc. (Nasdaq:CNET - news) and General
Electric Co.'s (NYSE:GE - news) NBC television network said Tuesday they would create the first Internet portal service aimed at users with high-speed modem connections.

The news comes just as high-speed, cable-based Internet service provider AtHome Corp. (Nasdaq:ATHM - news) agreed to buy Excite Inc.
(Nasdaq:XCIT - news), a Web search engine and directory, for $6.7 billion. Together the announcements show how competition is shaping up for next-generation Web offerings.

Soon, it'll be "You only have a 56K connection??? That's SO last year!"
