So you don't think E*TRADE will convert his second sell of 1000 shares as a short transaction? I always assumed that was the way it worked.

For example, if I owned 1000 shares of a company that I decided was going to tank, couldn't I sell my 1000 and go short by 1000 by simply putting in a sell order for 2000 shares?

If not, I stand corrected.
