Ain't that the truth. Looks like the first pitch has been thrown - and we're still languishing at $29. I'd like to - heck, LOVE to - see us break the previous significant high of $35 - but I'm not holding my breath.

HERZLIYA, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1999--VisionTech, Ltd., a world leader in high quality, low cost encoding solutions, is now shipping the MVCast(tm) MPEG -2 encoder, designed specifically to meet a broad spectrum of video compression applications from video authoring to video streaming.

"The VisionTech MVCast's quality, functionality, performance and price play a key role in our digital media strategy," said Samuel Turcotte, Market Segment Manager for Entertainment Technology at Sun Microsystems. "VisionTech's multiple board support and its powerful SDK, together with Sun's powerful workstations, servers, and storage provide a high-quality, low-cost solution for digital video compression and steaming applications."

MVCast specifications

The MVCast is a real time MPEG -2 encoder, implemented on a half size PCI board. MVCast performs both NTSC and PAL video encoding (I, P and B pictures at full D1 resolution), MPEG -1 layer I/II audio encoding, and Program/Transport stream multiplexing. Video is sourced from S-Video (Mini-din), Composite (RCA) external connectors, or from host memory. Analog audio is sourced from audio jack (Mini-Jack 3.5mm).

MVCast implements AVI to MPEG -2 transcoding and closed caption data insertion in video, program and transport stream.

MVCast is available under the Solaris(tm) 2.6/2.7 and Windows NT(tm) OS. The device drivers and application software provide multiple board support, allowing concurrent real time multiple stream encoding and multiplexing from different video and audio sources.

The embedded VTR device control application controls any frame accurate VTR that supports RS422 remote control and follows the Sony(tm) command set protocol. The device control is used to browse through the video input source and mark the frames that are targeted for encoding. Targeted video sequences can then be frame accurately encoded. MVCast is equipped with SDK, including a complete and comprehensively documented source code/API. The API set is platform independent, so porting to another OS may result with little or no changes. The SDK is bundled for developers and OEM customers as a part of VisionTech's product offering.

"VisionTech's SDK has proved to be a very simple, yet powerful tool for developing our real time ATM video streaming solution," commented Tim Dygert, Project Engineer with Escient, Inc. "VisionTech's support has been outstanding, allowing us to complete critical elements of our development far ahead of schedule."

Pricing

The MVCast is aggressively priced at $1,995 and is available now.
