The prices quoted in Europe already include the VAT. VATs are NOT like sales taxes, they are assessed on the "value added" at every step of manufacture. If you put $500 of parts together and sell the assembly for $1000 you pay VAT on the $500 difference, doesn't matter whether it is a computer, car, toy, whatever. The retail customer never sees the VAT broken out just like you never see gas taxes broken out at the pump anymore.

I don't know anything about what Dell does or does not offer in Europe.

BTW Have you checked the prices of other companies in Europe? I bet you will find that 20% premium on Compaq, IBM or any company that sells in both markets. Cradle to grave social programs are NOT free.
