Microsoft To Ship NT Upgrade Late - WSJ

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) plans to ship the final test version of Windows 2000, the upgrade for its Windows NT operating system in April, two weeks behind schedule, the Wall Street Journal said on Tuesday.

Microsoft told the Journal it expects the product to be available commercially by the end of the year.

The company said it delayed the shipment because of quality controls. Microsoft expects to ship the final version sometime after Labor Day, the company told the paper.

Windows 2000 is expected to compete against Unix and Novell Inc. (Nasdaq:NOVL - news)'s NetWare.

The company, which earns about twice as much for Windows NT compared with Windows 98, sees a major opportunity to increase revenue by making Windows 2000 the choice of businesses, rather than Windows 98.
