It makes me think of Intel and Microsoft.

I was disappointed. I look forward to the seasonally strong December quarter each year, but revenues were the same as last year despite a huge volume increase that increased Intel's revenue and sent Microsoft towards the moon. Jim Barkesdale claims that no tree can grow to heaven, but Bill Gates is proving him wrong.

Jack Kay said at the conference call that Compaq eliminated the DEC business, but he didn't mention anything about reductions in expenses due to the fact that the account no longer needs to be serviced. He also said that the product mix is shifting towards the low end, but didn't show expenses falling as tasks formerly performed by expensive California labor are replaced by cheaper Taiwanese labor.

Intel suffered the same pricing pressures as Phoenix, but they were able to cut expenses. They also raised their average selling price from $208 to $220 by selling more Xeons. Phoenix failed to show a similar increase because newer products such as ROMPilot and ACPIArchitect aren't selling as well as anticipated.

If you expect me to pay you a high California wage, you need to show me exciting new products that will bring big new revenue streams. I'm seeing that with the semiconductor IP group, but not with the rest of the company.
