El,
I think two or three good regional companies could be purchased for a lot less. Some may even be in private hands. If there are good private ISPs, CPQ stock would beat doing an IPO. Just a thought with no real research done on the theory.

My take, and only my opinion, but if CPQ gets into the internet big time it brings legitimacy to the net frenzy!!! Will the stock go up or down? Who the f--- knows but I would rather have my money on CPQ than ebay or amzn!!!!! I just want to get past Mr.G tomorrow, he scares the s--- outta me.

>Howie... So if CPQ lays out a few billion to buy an internet company,
>will CPQ stock go up or down??? El

The shopping.com deal was a purchased of a 'troubled' company. I agreed with the purchase as the price was not too high. If CPQ buys one of the internet high-flyers, it will validate the price of the internut stocks as a buy with CPQ stock is closer to 'cash' than todays purchase of xcite with @home stock.

A significant purchase of any of these net stocks will drive CPQ down.

With CPQ's resources, the could (should) build their own 'internet company' -- Why buy when you can build a better one?
