RM,
The funds lend their shares for shorting (for a fee) which adds to the float, the funds also trade around their position daily. A friend of mine works at a private firm that has a seat on the exchange and they have two people who trade AOL stock, thats all they do, just trade AOL stock.
There are so many more shares available than the float that you can't even rely on that figure as a trading indicator.

Hi Rocketman

According the site below, the float is 334,400,000.
Institutions own 77.4%, so that leaves 75,574,400 for the little people.

RocketMan, do you think we are in the process of filling the gap now between 150 and 167? When that happens, momentum will then takes past 167 I htink . IMHO, this would is the worst time to sell/trade AOL. My time line for this is the next 2 weeks or less. What do you think?
