Easy to beat the estimates,

The Oct. - Dec. quater has always been strong since their customers
are trying to spend their capital budgets before the end of the year.
Also, software sales are traditionally strong at the end of the year.

Your comparing apples to oranges .... compare 4th Q 98 to 4th Q 97.

4th Q 97 LU Earned $0.86/sh ... the estimate that q was $0.76/sh

Give the strength in INTC and MSFT ... and every other tech company that reported, I would expect LU to BLOW AWAY the estimate. By the way, I am not a shareholder of LU.

Lucent's revenues and earnings are always higher in its first quarter (the last quarter in a calendar year). This is caused by the way its customers distribute their capital expenditure budgets.

The current quarter's earnings will be lower than the last quarter's earnings. Do not make the mistake of using 4 times the number to be reported tomorrow to get its annual earnings.

Lucent has a history of consistently beating estimates. It should do the same for the last quarter.

Regards.
