DoubleD,

Nope, trade deficit is totally out of control all by itself -- another topic for another day.

Here's a link to the government's own debt data:

publicdebt.treas.gov

I have been watching the Dems and Repubs at each other's throats for over 20 years. Interestingly, one of the few recent things they both smilingly agree upon is that we reached a budgetary "surplus" as of last year. Aside from accounting gimmickry, this is plainly not the case. In short, they two parties seem to agree only when they are BOTH lying!

Clinton's address was pure fantasy -- same old series of budget-busting non-sequitors -- cut taxes, "save" social security, increase defense spending, increase education spending, increase medicare funding, etc., etc., and take both the Tooth Fairy & the Easter Bunny out for lunch while we're at it. And people eat this stuff up!

If there ever WERE a balanced budget, it would stay balanced for about 5 seconds should this rhetoric ever be applied.
