I agree with you. Having the government investing in stocks opens up a real can of worms.

Perhaps we need a Constitutional Amendment to enforce the separation of Corporation and State, much like the separation of Church and State. We need to ban advertising in public schools, much like the ban on prayer!

Seriously though, the only protection that people have against the abuses of big corporations has to come from the government. For a lot of reasons, investing SS funds in the stock market has to be one of the worst ideas that has ever been floated. It's embarrassing that Clinton has to stoop to such a low level to try to save himself. I've been a supporter of Clinton to this point, but this idea just shows his desperation. I can't believe that Treasury Secretary Rubin would support such a proposal. This sounds like something that Reagan would have proposed (after the Alzheimer's really took hold).
