There might be something in Borrego Springs, but the best bet for stores would be in Julian or Ramona. It looks like there are a number of unmaintained dirt roads and jeep trails into Short Wash, but I think we'll probably have to scout around to see which ones can be used safely. (Off-roading rule - just because a dirt road appears on a map doesn't mean it will be there when you arrive...)
