"<<<<<<<< flat panel vs CRT. >>>>>>>>"

I have a friend who wants a flat panel, so I've just begun researching them too. Seems like we've reached a critical mass of interest on the thread. A few remarks:

It seems that a big distinction is between digital and analog TFT monitors. My hunch is that Sean saw an example of the latter. The former are supposed to be notably superior, which makes good sense, because the image never gets translated from digital to analog and back again--pure digital all the way. Coupled with a high-quality TFT screen, this should result in unmatched contrast and quality.

PCMag has a somewhat dated (8/98) but still quite helpful piece on this. zdnet.com It discusses this distinction and reviews some of the current monitors.

My friend wants IBM and black, so I'm going to recommend he try this:

www5.pc.ibm.com

Interestingly, only the 15" IBM's currently come in digital. (they make 14,15, and 16 (the latter of which does 1280x1024.) This ships with a custom digital Matrox g200 graphics card-very nice. I bet it's an astounding display for $1,000. If 1024x768 is enough, it should be a neat way to go.

I would certainly like to hear from any who've worked with different models of these new displays.
