Thanks for the article. If the practice of the market makers manipulating the spreads is as lucrative as it seems, $900M is not much to pay to get off the hook. As an individual investor in a stock like Dell, I buy at a limit order and don't see the spread at all (it gets hidden by the rising of the stock). But the dealers are making a much larger commission, in effect pulling their commission out of my basis but not letting me account for it on my taxes. Mohan has brought up a point that irks me more as I think about it.
