Fidelity says online accounts tripled over past yr
BOSTON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Fidelity Investments on Tuesday said it more than tripled its online accounts to three million over the past year as World Wide Web use soared.

Fidelity, the nation's largest mutual fund company, said the figure represents about two million personal investing accounts and one million accounts through employer-sponsored retirement plans.

''As more investors choose the Web to conduct their personal finances, Fidelity continues to advance its Web channel to provide the convenience and control that customers demand,'' said Paul Ciriello, president of Fidelity Interactive Co.

The personal investing assets grew to $128 billion from $44 billion in the year ended November 30, Fidelity said. The firm also said 70 percent of commissionable trades are currently made on the Web, up sharply from just seven percent in January of 1997.
