U.S. HEADLINE STOCKS - Issues to watch Jan. 20
NEW YORK, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Stocks to watch Wednesday:

-- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) is expected to surge in early trading. After the market closed Tuesday, the company reported second quarter earnings that handily beat consensus estimates. The stock closed at 155-5/8 Tuesday.

-- Computer Associates (NYSE:CA - news) reported third quarter earnings per share of $0.64 compared with $0.60 in the year-ago period. The First Call consensus estimate was $0.61. Shares finished at 47-13/16.

-- GTE Corp. (NYSE:GTE - news), the telecommunications company planning to merge with Bell Atlantic Corp. (NYSE:BEL - news), said Tuesday it would sacrifice revenue growth this year to ensure earnings per share growth of 13 to 15 percent. GTE shares finished at 67-15/16.
