Workstation shipments rise 22 pct in '98

Tuesday January 19, 8:56 pm Eastern Time

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jan 19 (Reuters) - Shipments of computer workstations grew 22 percent in 1998, amid strong gains in Windows NT-based or personal workstations, according to a report issued Tuesday.

Research firm International Data Corp. said its annual survey of workstations showed that Hewlett-Packard Co.(NYSE:HWP - news) was the overall leader, with Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) close behind in shipments of total workstations, which include Windows NT-based systems and the traditional Unix-based systems.......

Hewlett-Packard and Dell, which had zero market share in the beginning of 1997, are in a virtual tie for first place in both units and revenue for the personal workstation segment, the firm said..............
.........

Looking ahead, International Data expects big companies with large installed bases of Unix workstations will begin to move NT systems into their core application areas in 1999 and 2000, continuing to fuel growth in the NT-based workstation arena.........
