Pfizer calls on UK govt to publish report on Viagra

January 20, 1999

LONDON, AFX via NewsEdge Corporation : Pfizer Inc unit Pfizer Ltd has challenged the Department of Health to publish the Standing Medical Advisory Committee's (SMAC) clinical recommendations concerning prescription of the company's Viagra drug.

Viagra was licensed throughout the EU for the treatment of erectile dysfunction on Sept 15.

A UK Health Service Circular on Sept 14 instructed health authorities and doctors not to prescribe Viagra on the National Health Service except under exceptional circumstances. "The circular was positioned as an interim statement made on the basis of advice given by SMAC to be applicable until SMAC's clinical guidelines and/or 'definitive guidance' from government were available," Pfizer said in a statement issued today.

The company said it understands that SMAC reported its recommendations to the Department of Health on time and within weeks of the circular being issued.

Pfizer said it is "dismayed" that no guidelines have been issued, and questioned why the contents of the SMAC report have not been revealed "in circumstances where doctors are concerned to comply with their statutory terms of service", which require doctors to prescribe the medicines which their patients clinically need.
